In 2014 Thorpe Park unveiled Angry Birds Land. By 2023 the area felt dated, and the IP no longer connected with the target audience. The challenge was to reimagine the space on a £1.2m budget, re-theming the drop tower, dodgems, 4D cinema, sweet shop, quick-service restaurant and toilet facilities.
The land sat at the junction of three distinct areas: Amity Cove, a 1960s American fishing village; Amity Speedway, a retro raceway; and the vibrant Calypso Quay. The new theme had to knit them together seamlessly, creating a natural flow from one to the next.
Concept & Development
I proposed a new land, Big Easy Boulevard, a vibrant New Orleans street that bridged the three neighbouring areas. It carried an American flavour that linked with Amity Cove and Speedway, while its colour and energy tied seamlessly into Calypso Quay.
I also developed new names and themes for every attraction and surrounding facilities. Once approved, I worked with a graphic designer to produce overhead and ground-view concepts that brought the vision to life.

Detonator
The park’s much-loved drop tower, Detonator, had kept the same name for twenty years. The challenge was to tie it into the new land while retaining that legacy. I created the concept of Freedom Fireworks Co, a chaotic fireworks factory inviting guests to test its latest 4th of July creation, Red, White & Boom!

I commissioned a new feel-good soundtrack, wrote queue line announcements, and directed audio synced to the ride experience, with examples below.

Formerly King Pig’s Wild Hog Dodgems, the attraction was reimagined as Big Easy Bumpers, a New Orleans gas station run by the world’s most laid-back man. Positioned as the last chance to fuel the fun before hitting Amity Speedway, it tied the new land seamlessly into its neighbour.

Formerly Angry Birds 4D Experience, the attraction was reimagined as Sunset Cinema, a retro-inspired movie theatre. The new identity gave flexibility to rotate films, launching with Ready Player One 4D Experience and switching to IT 4D for Halloween.
Commercial & Facilities
Candypips Sweet Easy was styled as a family-run candy store hidden in a converted speakeasy, while nearby Boulevard Bites served up Cajun comfort food to match the land’s New Orleans feel, even the toilets got in on the French Quarter vibe.
